This year’s update to ITIL isn’t so much a reworking as it is a revision. However, many of the consistency issues and overall comprehensiveness of ITIL is being addressed in this particular release. This is not to say that major modifcations are to be found in the content itself; only that now, perhaps, it might be easier for a larger percentage of individuals to understand and implement.

Additionally, many of the questions that had been raised in the 4 year stretch, since the release of ITIL V3, concerning whether information contained therein was correct or not have also been addressed in ITIL 2011. To put it simply, ITIL 2011 is akin to a software patch of an existing element (ITIL V3); it is simply improving upon the inherent design.

Managing or establishing IT services is a daunting task to say the least; there are so many things to consider that it is mind boggling. ITIL afords one the ability to gain a much clearer understanding of what’s required for proper establishment and management of nearly any IT scenario. It does this by providing one with detailed descriptions of the best practices as well as checklists and other actions that are relevant to the task(s) at hand, whatever it might be.

ITIL 2011 seeks to expand upon not only the actual practices described in V3 but also the methods one might use for managing fnances in an IT system. Items like fnance management are very important and often overlooked by IT personnel, but it should be noted that one’s ability to manage their fnances will ultimately determine what their system is actually capable of.

What’s changed? (V3 –> 2011)

Aside from correcting any glaring errors or incomplete practices/solutions, there are several other key changes that have been made in ITIL 2011. The relevance of any ITIL version can only be measured by its ability to be efective in emerging situations; with each new edition, we get one step closer to arriving at a more comprehensive methodology. Included in ITIL 2011 are also many of the

recommendations that might have been made by the training community at large since the release of ITIL V3. These changes are vitally important for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the ongoing adaptation of the work itself (which provides individuals with the opportunity to address their current issues in a quick, complete, and thorough manner).
